Welcome

The name is Vasile Popescu and watercolor painting is one of my great passions. If you decide to browse this content, we may possibly share some common thoughts and visions about color, light, art in general and ultimately life. You're welcome to discover here, with me, glimpses and moments of our big journey and great passing, the way I see it through colors. Nature, seasons, love, intimacy, laughter, flowers, poems, time and being as a whole.

Ars Poetica

My personal creed, best put in words by the great Romanian poet and philosopher, Lucian Blaga:

Eu nu strivesc corola de minuni a lumii

(I will not crush the world’s corolla of wonder)

...si nu ucid
cu mintea mea tainele, ce le-ntalnesc
in calea mea
in flori, in ochi, pe buze ori morminte.
Lumina altora
sugruma vraja nepatrunsului ascuns
in adancimi de intuneric,
dar eu,
eu cu lumina mea sporesc a lumii taina
si-ntocmai cum cu razele ei albe luna
nu micsoreaza, ci tremuratoare
mareste si mai tare taina noptii,
asa imbogatesc si eu intunecata zare
cu largi fiori de sfant mister
si tot ce-i nenteles
se schimba-n nentelesuri si mai mari
sub ochii mei
caci eu iubesc
si flori, si ochi, si buze, si morminte.

...and I will not kill
with reason
the mysteries I meet along my way
in flowers, eyes, lips and graves.
The light of others
drowns the deep magic hidden
in the profound darkness.
I increase the world’s enigma
with my light
much as the moon with its white beams
does not diminish but increase
the shimmering mystery of night
I enrich the darkening horizon
with chills of the great secret.
All that is hard to know
becomes a greater riddle
under my very eyes
because I love alike
flowers, lips, eyes and graves.

My Story

Vasile PopescuWho am I? The man, the artist, the regular guy next door. The watercolor and me. Beyond words, my watercolor probably would better reflect who I really am. But the watercolor has not always been my prime muse.

As we all search for our better selves in life, I became a police officer, and long years of hard duty got me achieving the title of chief police commander, just in time to realize that I may not be in the right place at the right time. Read more...
